Step Away From the Fried Chicken

In local on May 17, 2008 at 10:56 pm

In an article recently published by The Lancet, fat people are causing global warming.

… two scientists write that obese people are disproportionately responsible for high food prices and greenhouse gas emissions because they consume 18% more food energy due to their greater body mass — and require increased quantities of fuel to transport themselves and the food they eat. “Promotion of a normal distribution of BMI would reduce the global demand for, and thus the price of, food,” write the authors, Phil Edwards and Ian Roberts of the evocatively named London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

First, then environmentalists will come for the obese. What next? The bald — their shiny heads reflect UV rays back into the atmosphere and contribute to the deterioration of the ozone layer.

All of our crises are always the fault of someone else. We are never culpable for the situations in which we find ourselves.

Colorado Personhood Amendment

In catholic, family, local on May 8, 2008 at 5:34 pm

There have been many different strategies over the past 35 years as to how to fight the Culture of Death on a political level. From propositions for a Federal Constitutional Amendment to any other numerous forms of legislation, nothing seems to work.

As we bring this issue of Life closer to the local level, the States have tried the outlaw of abortion, parental notification, and other such tactics. Right now, the state of Colorado is being pushed to adopt a Personhood Amendment “to define a person as including any human being from the moment of fertilization.”

This sounds like a straightforward tactic that has deep implications for abortion in the state of Colorado. And yet, about 1/2 way through the article we read this:

The Catholic Conference of Colorado has said this isn’t the right time to try to pass an outright ban, preferring to chip at Roe v. Wade.

How is this even possible? What “chips” has any legislation in Colorado made against Roe v. Wade? How is Colorado any more Pro-Life than it was 35 years ago?

Just in case you do not know, the Bishops of Colorado are:

  • Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. – Archbishop of Denver
  • Most Reverend Arthur N. Tafoya, D.D. – Bishop of Pueblo
  • Most Reverend Michael J. Sheridan, S.T.D – Bishop of Colorado Springs

Back prior to the 2004 presidential election, many Catholics hailed Bishop Sheridan for his defense of the Holy Eucharist by publicly stating he would forbid Holy Communion to pro-abortion Catholic politicians, elected officials and judges.

But according to another article, now is not the right time:

The bishops, however, are not rejecting the amendment. “We commend the goal of this effort to end abortion.  Individual Catholics may certainly choose to work for its passage,” they said.
The reason the Catholic leaders gave for their choice not to back the amendment was that other pro-lifers had raised “serious questions” about the timing and content of the amendment.

Why is timing an issue? How many more babies must die before the timing is “right”?

And what about the “content” of the amendment? Please, Your Excellencies, explain to us what questions pro-lifers have raised about this amendment. Your flocks may not be well educated, but we are not stupid. Show us why the content of the amendment would actually do harm.

Otherwise, you seem to be caving-in to unknown political and economic pressures at the cost of countless human lives.

“Sad For What We Have Done”

In family, pop culture on April 14, 2008 at 6:26 pm

As a follow up to the Polygamist Compound Raid in Texas, I present the following. Apparently, 416 children and their mothers are being held in a shelter that is contributing to fear and illness. The state is spending $25,000 per day on this debacle.

Dr. Stephen Smith has been providing medical care at the state shelter, and he says he is upset by what he has seen there.
“All of the mothers and children that I spoke with wanted to go back to the ranch, without a doubt,” Smith told ABC News. “Personally, it makes me very sad for what we have done.”

For over a week, these people have been subject to state investigations that have produced no fruit.

The teen who made the call for help that prompted the raid has yet to be identified.

For some reason, the term “witch hunt” comes to mind. But if you are not concerned about this, do not worry. The state will continue to violate human rights when they find an excuse to move your family into a shelter and scrounge through all of your belongings.

“In every way I look at this, it’s more of the same. It’s religious persecution,” said a church member named Richard.

400+ Children Taken From Homes

In family on April 8, 2008 at 1:26 pm

CNN is reporting about more than 400 children being taken from their homes in Texas. Through an anonymous tip that has yet to be verified, Texas State authorities entered the area and re-located the children to an interview area.

Some 133 women left the ranch voluntarily with the children and were being housed at a historic fort here while authorities conduct interviews. Dressed in ankle-length dresses with their hair pinned up in braids, the women milled about Monday as the children played on the fort’s old parade grounds.

The entire area is being searched for evidence of misconduct, including personal homes and the area church.

One of the investigators, Children’s Protective Services spokesman Marleigh Meisner, said she was also involved in the 1993 siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco.

Where is due process?

Still uncertain is the location of the girl whose call initiated the raid.

Since when is it perfectly acceptable for government authorities to follow-up on an anonymous, unverified tip to displace over 500 people? Who is next?

Beware! As soon as those in power decide that you or your family or your church are no longer chic or tolerable, they will be knocking on your door and taking away the ones that you love.

Oh, yeah. All of these people actually live in a compound and belong to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They broke with the mainstream LDS generations ago over the discipline of polygamy.

I do not condone the practice of polygamy, but I do believe that this kind of strong-armed action confirms the dangerous precedent that the United States Government and her State puppets no longer believe in the “land of the free and the home of the brave”. In the opinion of the authorities, the sooner you conform to the idyllic Stepford Wife model, the safer you will be.

British Jedi Church Under Attack

In funny, geek on March 31, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Just in case you didn’t know, the Jedi are a serious Force in Great Britain (pun intended), due to the 2001 census, where 400,000 people claimed the Jedi faith as their own.

Smoking VaderThis weekend, one of the founders of the British Jedi Church was savagely attacked during a documentary interview by none other than Darth Vader, who “was under the influence of alcohol, [and who] went on to assault the camera crew and a hairdresser.”

I’m sure that there is some kind of quirky hairdresser joke in there somewhere.

If you, too, want to get in on the action, the ‘church’ has a branch in Florida.

Man Claims to Speak ‘Australian’ After Allegedly Being Raped by Wombat

SYDNEY —  A New Zealand man has been sentenced to community service after telling police he was raped by a wombat and the experience had made him speak “Australian”.

Arthur Ross Cradock, 48, from the South Island town of Motueka, called police on February 11 and told them he was being raped at his home by the wombat and he needed help, The Nelson Mail newspaper reported.

The orchard worker later called back and said: “Apart from speaking Australian now, I’m pretty all right, you know.”

Cradock pleaded guilty in the local court to using a phone for a fictitious purpose. He was sentenced to 75 hours’ community work.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Stringer told the court alcohol played a large role in Cradock’s life.

All I can say is that I’ll have what he’s having.
